Fedor Tarachkov (1834-1898), a porcelain painter from a family of artists at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, specialised in historical and figure painting on porcelain, including vases, service ware and Easter eggs. He was appointed as a painter at the factory in 1850, an assistant master in 1854 and eventually rose to the rank of master in 1864. Throughout his time at the factory, Tarachkov won several gold and silver medals for his impressive work and distinguished services.

The present plate is painted after a painting by Adolf Charlemagne (1826-1901), one of Russia’s most renowned painters of historical and battle scenes. He completed his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Fyodor Bruni and Bogdan Willewalde.
