The prints were produced in limited editions from paintings done by William Alexander (1767-1816). William Alexander was a proficient English painter, illustrator, and engraver. He was also one of the two official artists who accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792-4, which was Great Britain's first envoy to China. Alexander was best known for his drawings of this Macartney mission. The hallmarks of his work were clearness and harmony of colour, simplicity and taste in composition, the grace of outline, and delicacy of execution. Some of his drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy and were displayed at the Brighton Pavilion for George IV. Prints of his work were reproduced from engravings and are now very rare to come by.
