Description
Fujisawa Hideyuki (b. 1972),
A lacquered Tenmoku teabowl with stand
teabowl: d. 9.1 cm
stand: d. 14,6 cm
The present bowl is another classic example of Fujisawa Hideyuki pushing the boundaries of traditional materials to create a novel aesthetic experience with echoes of the past.
The interior of the present bowl resembles characteristics of the Yohen temmoku teabowls, distinct Song dynasty teabowls revered for their glaze showing a rainbow spectrum of colours. These esteemed National treasures of Japan include one from the collection of the Seikado Bunko Art Museum in Tokyo, and the other one from the collection of the The Fujita Art Museumin Osaka, both published in Nishida Hiroko and Degawa Tetsuro, Chugoku no toji/Chinese Ceramics, vol. 6, Tenmoku, Tokyo, 1999, pls 30 and 31.
The mysterious pattern of mother-of-pearl inlays against the lustrous black lacquer is resilient to the cosmos, this contrasts with the bucolic aesthetic created from the grained wood exterior of the cup and stand – an interesting combination alluding to the heaven and earth.
