The marbled and copious layers of black and red lacquer were accumulated overtime and a by-product of lacquer production in Kitakata in Fukushima Prefecture during the Showa period in Japan. This low table would have initially functioned as a utilitarian tool for craftsman for straining coloured lacquer.
