Following 1573 when the Muromachi government was overthrown, the aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi evolved amongst Japanese society. Rustic Korean teabowls and local Japanese raku pottery slowly displaced Chinese teabowls as common utensils in Japanese tea ceremonies.

The notion of wabi-sabi, primarily derived from Zen Buddhism, is an aesthetic approach which celebrates imperfection, spontaneity and austerity. The understated rustic beauty of this bowl, with its dimpled glaze and textured clay body, would have perfectly embodied this aesthetic.
