Sylvia Plath
Two annotated photographs, 1961-1962
Envelope, labelled "Frieda R. Hughes" in ballpoint pen, containing:
i) photograph of Sylvia Plath with her daughter Frieda Hughes at their home in North Tawton, annotated by Plath on verso: "Court Green: September 1961", 91 x 90 mm.;
ii) photograph of Sylvia Plath and her children Frieda Hughes and Nicholas Farrar Hughes, annotated by Plath on verso: "Mummy, Frieda & | Nicholas on | Christening Day | March 25 | 1962", 62 x 65mm.
TWO PHOTOGRAPHS ANNOTATED BY SYLVIA PLATH, giving a glimpse into Plath's domestic life in 1961 and 1962.
Plath and Hughes moved to Court Green in North Tawton, Devon, in late August 1961. Whilst Plath left the house on 10 December 1962, it is significant as the place where she wrote most of the Ariel poems. Hughes lived there on and off until his death in 1998. The first photograph depicts Sylvia and Frieda standing outside their home shortly after having moved in. Frieda is opening the door of the family's Morris Minor 1000 Traveller, which Plath and Hughes had decided to purchase whilst still living in London (using funds from "poetry prizes of the last two years", as Hughes remarked).
