Description

Joannes Sleidanus

Continuatio... de statu religionis et reipublicae tomus tertius... Frankfurt: heirs of Jakob Fischer, 1619

8vo (184 x 115mm.), contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards lettered in black CONSISTORIUM on upper cover and 1626 on lower cover, upper cover with panel stamp portrait of Joachim Ernst, Margrave of Brandenburg, lower cover with panel stamp containing the Brandenburg-Hohenzollern arms dated 1607, two clasps, blue edges, lacking both straps, edges faded

The governmental library at Ansbach was originally founded by Joachim Ernst of Brandenburg (1583-1625). Another binding with a panel-stamped portrait of Joachim Ernst and these arms is recorded by Goldschmidt, no. 268, on another 1619 imprint, though Goldschmidt mentions the binder's initials, H.I., which are not visible on this stamp. The dimensions given for this H.I. portrait stamp in Haebler match the one on this book.
