Description

Henri Matisse

A collection of two books, a photograph and a postcard inscribed by Matisse to Simone "Monette" Vincent, comprising:

i) Cabinet photograph of Matisse, 160 x 120mm., inscribed "A Mademoiselle Monette Vincent... Henri Matisse", dated 21 December 1942, with an ink drawing of a flower and a line portrait of a woman on verso;

ii) Verve, vol. IV, no 13. Paris: Editions de la revue Verve, 1945, large 4to, original lithograph, original boards with pictorial dust-jacket, INSCRIBED ON TITLE-PAGE to Monette Vincent (and another person, whose name is crossed through), dated Nice, 28 April 1950 and with crayon flowers, dust-jacket worn;

iii) Matisse, seize peintures 1939-1943. Paris: Les éditions du Chêne, 1943, large 4to, INSCRIBED AT HEAD OF TEXT to Mademoiselle Simone Vincent, dated Vence, 8 February 1944, original wrappers, binding defective;

iv) Postcard of Matisse's "Portrait of Madame Matisse", WITH A SIGNED AUTOGRAPH INSCRIPTION giving his best wishes to them both, dated 1950

Matisse painted several portraits of Monette Vincent in 1942, including "La femme en rose" (sold at Sotheby's, 5 February 2008), which seems to have the same facial outline as the drawing on the back of the photograph.
