FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST ISSUE, 3 volumes, 8vo (151 x 122mm.), half titles, wood-engraved frontispieces by Francis E. Topham, leaf of advertisements listing Dickens' works at the end each volume, all first states, volumes I and II listing 4 or 5 works and The Christmas Books, that in volume III with earliest listing for A Child's History of England, original reddish-brown bold ribbed cloth, covers decorated in blind with outer border enclosing gilt stamped central motif, spines decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, covers lightly discoloured and rubbed at corners, backstrips faded, rubbed at head and foot, that of volume I partly torn and chipped with loss at foot
A good copy in the original cloth of Dickens' intensely anti-aristocratic and anti-monarchist history of England for children. Originally serialised anonymously in Household Words between 25 January 1851 and 10 December 1853.
