Description

Breviarium, Cassinese Congregation

Diurnum monasticum iuxta ritum monachorum sancte Iustine noviter impressum. (Venice: heirs of Lucantonio Giunta), 1541

8vo (155 x 101mm.), printed in red and black throughout, title with small woodcut of a bishop and woodcut Giunta device printed in red, several openings with full-page woodcut and inhabited woodcut border, woodcut initials and illustrations, later vellum, gilt and gauffered edges from an earlier binding, lacking final quire and leaf [con]2, woodcut excised from g3, occasional light dampstaining, hinges broken, edges rubbed

An uncommon and richly illustrated liturgical work, a shorter version of the Breviary containing just the services for the daytime. The Giunta workshop specialised in liturgical printing; they also produced editions of the Cassinese Diurnum in 1512 and 1562.
