London's Carthusian monastery (Charterhouse) was closed in 1537 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1611 the property was purchased by Thomas Sutton (1532-1611) who endowed it as an almshouse, chapel, and school, naming the new institution King James's Hospital. Charterhouse School outgrew its origins and moved to larger premises in Surrey in 1872, but an almshouse and care home are still found on the site.
