Description

Bible. Latin

Biblia sacra, ex postremis Doctorum omnium vigiliis, ad Hebraicam veritatem, & probatissimorum exemplarium fidem. Lyon: Guillaume Boullé, 1542

8vo (170 x 110mm.), woodcut device on title-page, woodcuts in text, woodcut device on final verso, nineteenth-century crimson straight-grained morocco by Carss & Co. (of Glasgow), elaborately gilt-tooled with thistle and peacock motifs, gilt edges, some marginal paper repairs (some just touching printed marginalia), quire c somewhat smudged, annotations washed

A charming volume. The woodcuts were previously used in the folio Latin Bible printed in Lyon in 1520 (Mortimer, Harvard French 63) and are connected with the artists Hans Springinklee and Erhard Schön. This edition is also recorded with the names of the Lyon printers Jacques Giunta and Hugues de La Porte in the colophon.
