woodblock printed book, 13 volumes, frontispiece titled as above, signed Katsuragawa Hoshu zoshin and sealed, preface dated 1855 (Ansei 2); binding: fukurotoji (pouch binding), blue covers with stylised chrysanthemum and geometric motif, with title slips; encased in three 20th century fitted blue linen board cases with impressed gold leaf Japan Society Imperial chrysanthemum crest


Obon: 25.5 x 18 cm., 10 x 7⅛ in.

Katsuragawa Hoshu was a scholar of Rangaku (‘Dutch learning’) and served the Tokugawa shogunate as a physician and Dutch translator.
