Description
[Martyn, Benjamin]
An Impartial Enquiry into the State and Utility of the Province of Georgia. London: Printed for W. Meadows, 1741
8vo (193 x 120 mm). Half-title with publisher's advertisement on the verso, title-page with woodcut vignette, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, woodcut initial; uniform short closed tear to last 4 leaves, as if they were being prepared to be trimmed. Old marbled wrappers; crease and tiny chip to front wrapper, with dealer's description tipped on to the verso.
This pamphlet addressed false charges that the climate of Georgia was unhealthy, that the soil was barren, that there were no products for trade, that lands were granted on improper terms, and argued against the introduction of slavery. Martyn was secretary to the Trustees of Georgia; authorship has also been attributed to Lord John Percival. Uncommon with the half-title.
