Description
Drayton, John
Memoirs of the American Revolution, From Its Commencement to the Year 1776, inclusive; As Relating to The State of South-Carolina and ... the States of North-Carolina and Georgia. Charleston: A.E. Miller, 1821
2 vols, 8vo in half-sheet imposition (237 x 142 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of William Henry Drayton with tissue guard in first vol., 3 engraved maps (2 folding); moderate to severe browning, foxing and staining, minor marginal worm trails in first vol., hole in text on 2:25 costing a few letters. Original blue paper boards, rebacked in period style, hinges renewed, endpapers browned, ownership inscriptions on front pastedowns obliterated (bleaching, inking).
A standard source for the early history of the American Revolution in the southern theatre, largely derived from material Drayton inherited from his father, who was a member of the South Carolina Committee of Safety—as well as of its provisional government, and who later served in the Continental Congress. One of the maps shows Forts Sullivan and Moultrie.
