Ana-Maria Pacheco works across sculpture, paint, and print. Her work is influenced by supernatural themes some of which are native to her home country of Brazil and they unfold in complex and sometimes subtle ways in her work. In the present work, Pacheco explores the theme of the masquerade and of the carnival. The central female figure looks out menacingly behind her mask – it is ambiguous whether she is sailing away or towards the viewer. As a result, Pacheco creates a narrative of mystery and intrigue in this scene, heightened by her bright bold use of the pastels.
