linen embroidered with silk, pieced from 10 sections of embroidery, worked with birds and floral vases

approximately 164 by 123cm.

In his discussion on Azemmour embroidered hangings, Markus Voigt notes that they derive from Italian silk embroideries and lace such as one example in the MET, New York (acc.no.1975.1.1790, see Voigt, ‘Azemmour embroidered hanging’ in Hali, no. 201, pp.46-47). Further examples displaying a closely comparable design are published in Niloo Imami Paydar and Ivo Grammet (eds.), The Fabric of Moroccan Life, Indianapolis, 2002, pp. 95-5 and Isabelle Denamur, Moroccan Textile Embroidery, Paris, 2003, pp.184-5).
