Description

Vincenzo Scamozzi

L'idea della architettura universale... parte prima, libro primo (-parte seconda, libro ottavo). Piazzola: nel Luoco delle Vergini, 1687

folio (331 x 218mm.), additional engraved title-page by Alessandro della Via, woodcut initials and headpieces, engraved illustrations, contemporary vellum, somewhat soiled at beginning and end, engraved title repaired at edges, binding repaired

Scamozzi's comprehensive treatise on architecture was first published in 1615; this edition was printed in Piazzola sul Brenta, where Marco Contarini had theatres built at his Palladian villa as well as a printing press which produced libretti and festival books. BAL RIBA states that this was "the first complete new edition" with etched replacements for the original woodcuts (p.1751).

For another work by Scamozzi, see lot 76.
