Description

Francesco Petrarca

Trionfi [with commentary by Bernardo Lapini da Siena]. Bologna: [Hannibal Malpiglius], 27 April 1475

Median folio (335 x 228mm.), containing the Trionfi only, 244 leaves, [a–c10 d14 e–h8 i k10 l–n8 o6 p4 q12 r8 s10 t u8 x10 y z A8 B–D6 E12 *4], 47 lines, roman type, contemporary blind-tooled morocco over wooden boards, remains of four clasps (including all four catchplates on lower cover), vellum endleaves (one at the front, one at the back, but not original), occasional light staining or foxing (particularly at start of volume), some small wormholes in text and in binding, binding rubbed

An attractive edition of the Trionfi, printed by Annibale Malpighi, perhaps along with the bookseller Sigismondo de' Libri, whose workshop still contained some copies in 1484. This is the first appearance of the commentary of Bernardo Lapini for the Trionfi.

It was originally issued together with the Canzoniere (listed separately by GW but together by ISTC).

The binding is plausibly from Bologna, though De Marinis 1442, assigned to Ferrara, has a very similar overall design.
