Description

Francesco Petrarca

Sonetti, canzoni, e triomphi... con la spositione di Bernardino Daniello. Venice: Giovanni Antonio Niccolini da Sabbio, (March) 1541

4to (212 x 146mm.), main text and commentary both in italics, old vellum, green and red morocco lettering-pieces, title-leaf damaged and stained, some staining throughout, a few wormholes

Edited by the Lucchese Bernardino Daniello, who also produced a commentary on Dante and translations from the Latin. He had studied in Venice under Trifone Gabriele who is acknowledged in the preface. Nicolini da Sabbio also printed an edition of Petrarca with Vellutello's commentary in the same year.

Loosely inserted at the front of the volume is the title-page from an expurgated edition of Petrarca, Malipiero's Il Petrarca spirituale (Venice: Francesco Marcolini, November 1536; Edit16 28602) containing a woodcut portrait of Petrarca on the recto and a woodcut of Malipiero and Petrarca in a wood on the verso (the leaf is slightly soiled with a few small wormholes).
