Description

Battista Fregoso

De dictis factisque memorabilibus collectanea, a Camillo Gilino Latina facta. (Milan: Giovanni Giacomo Ferrari, 1509)

folio (300 x 208mm.), woodcut initials, nineteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, d3 torn without loss, first few leaves lightly soiled, extremities slightly rubbed

A compilation of memorabilia arranged by subject, in imitation of the work of Valerius Maximus, giving examples from the Bible and classical antiquity up to Fregoso's time ("a rerum humanarum primordio usque in p[rae]sens tempus"); the final entries relate to Henry VII's treatment of the last surviving members of the House of York. Under the section on ingenuity, he mentions the astronomer Guido Bonatti (see lot 54) and Gutenberg as well as Columbus.
