Description

Confessionale [Italian]

Forma e regola di confessarsi. [Northern Italy, c. 1474?]

4to (200 x 132mm.), 26 leaves, [a10 b-c8], 22-23 lines, roman type, modern calf blind-tooled in period style, two vellum endleaves from a thirteenth-century Italian antiphonary (containing part of the feast of St John the Evangelist) bound at front and end, occasional light soiling or staining, repaired tear in penultimate leaf, a few small wormholes towards end

UNRECORDED. This Italian confessional, with the incipit "Per che ogni fidel cristiano una fiata al anno debia usare segondo el comandamento de la chiesa la confessione", is recorded in two versions in ISTC, with the attributed imprints [Venice: Bartholomaeus Cremonensis, c. 1474] (ISTC ic00822800, 1 copy recorded) and [Northern Italy: Printer of Antonius de Rosellis, "De legitimationibus", c. 1480-1485] (ISTC ic00822500, 4 copies recorded). All three versions are very similar in appearance and have the first initial space staggered to allow for the wider bowl and narrower stem of the letter P.

Two further leaves from the same medieval manuscript can be found in the binding of Justinian's Institutiones (lot 132).
