An Egyptian Polychrome and Gilt Cartonnage Mask of a Woman

Roman Period, circa 1st Century A.D.


her face with dimpled chin, slightly aquiline nose, and eyes and eyebrows painted in black, the ribbed wavy coiffure parted in the center, and wearing a three-stranded beaded collar, necklace with crescentic pendant in applied relief, and tripartite wig surmounted by the vulture headdress, the lappets of the wig decorated with Anubis and Re-Harakhty pouring libations before the mummy of the deceased, the breast-plate below ornamented with the mummy lying in state between confronted falcons, an inscription above, the back of the wig with Osiris standing and holding the crook and flail, and flanked by confronted figures of Isis and Nephthys, a column of inscription before each goddess.
