An Attic Black-figured Oinochoe

related to the Altenburg Class, circa late 6th Century B.C.


with echinus foot, flanged neck, round mouth, and high ribbed handle with arms on the rim, the frontal panel painted with a man riding in a quadriga, accompanied by a woman standing behind him, three warriors (one stepping up into the quadriga) wearing Corinthian helmets, and two himation-clad men, alternating red and black tongues above, details in added red and white.

Height 22.2 cm.

Benjamin Starr (1904-1983), New York, acquired in 1959 or earlier, then by descent
