A Roman Marble Sarcophagus Fragment

circa 3rd Century A.D.


carved in high relief with a wedding scene, the goddess Concordia standing between the betrothed couple, the bride wearing a chiton and himation, the groom clad in a cuirass and short cloak and pouring a libation onto a fire ablaze on top of an altar.

Height 50.8 cm.

European private collection, circa 17th/18th century (based on restoration techniques)
