A Greek Marble Figure of a Goddess

mid 4th Century B.C.


standing with the weight on her right leg, wearing a chiton tied with a belt below the breasts, and himation draped across the abdomen and over the left arm, the lost right lower arm repaired in antiquity, the lost left lower arm carved separately and attached, a tree behind; no restorations.

This figure is a charming Greek original from the mid 4th century B.C. For the folds over the abdomen cf. the Great Herculaneum woman type: https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/1065512. The meaning of the tree is unclear. A figure in the same style and of similar size was sold at Sotheby’s, London, December 17th, 2020, no. 23.
