German Horse Racing Interest: a large silver casket, J. Wagner & Sohn, Berlin, circa 1910
Each side with an oil painting behind glass (the lid featuring Dolomit with a jockey wearing the silks of the Gestüt Schlenderhan, the front panel featuring Dolomit's sire Ard Patrick, the left side with Dolomit's family tree, the right side with the Gestüt Schlenderhan stud, the back with Dolomit as a foal with his dam- Danubia), the interior of the casket lined with velvet,
30cm., 12in. long
Dolomit (1909-1924) was produced from the Saphir mare Danubia who features on the back panel of the casket. He was raced with considerable success from the ages of two through five. In some of his races at age two, Dolomit was partnered by American ex-patriate jockey Jimmy Winkfield. Aboard Dolomit, Winkfield won the Rheinisches-Zuchtrennen at Koln. Dolomit's other victories at two included the Renard-Rennen at Hoppegarten, the Preis des Winterfavoriten, and the Hammonia-Preis at Hamburg, which made him the leading money earner in Germany in 1911. At three his biggest victory came in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, at four in the Kincsem-Rennen at Berlin, and at five in the Grunewald-Rennen and the Jubiläums-Preis at Hanover. He was eventually sold to another stud in Germany before finally being sold to the Hungarian National Stud at Kisber.
His sire Ard Patrick (1899–1923) enjoyed considerable success in his career. He was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In 1902 he won The Derby, defeating the filly Sceptre. He returned from injury problems to record his most important success when he defeated Sceptre and the Derby winner Rock Sand in the 1903 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse. He was then retired from racing and exported to Germany for stud duty. He was sold for the sum of £20,000.
