Capturing expansive vistas and intricate details of stately retinues and Buddhist rituals, the present albums records the 1720 Qing expedition into Tibet. In response to the 1717 invasion of Tibet by the Zunghars, a powerful confederacy of Western Mongols in Xinjiang province led by Tsewang Rapten, the Kangxi Emperor in 1720 ordered the expedition of Qing troops, together with Tibetan forces to expel the Dzungars and install Kelzang Gyatso as the seventh Dalai Lama.

The album follows the tradition of court paintings of the early Qing dynasty that documented significant expeditions across China’s vast region and served to glorify the Emperor’s triumphant rule.
