Adams scholar Mary Street Alinder notes that during the 1920s Adams utilized a wide variety of paperstock – including matte-surface, gold-toned papers – and often affixed his photographs to textured, colored mounts ranging from buff to deep brown.

Beginning in 1920, Adams served for four years as the summer custodian of LeConte Memorial Lodge in Yosemite. A horizontal image of the Sierra Club structure became Adams’ first published image when it appeared in the San Francisco magazine Overland Monthly in 1921.
