In the present sculpture, Dumaige depicts the pivotal moment from Jean-Leon Gérôme's 1866 painting Cléopatre et César, when Cléopatra is revealed to Caesar after her servant smuggled her into the palace wrapped in a carpet. Dumaige exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1863 to 1886, and he was a student of Augustin Alexandre Dumont and Jean-Jacques Feuchère.
