Élisa-Marie-Stéphanie-Adrienne Sonrel (1874–1953), more commonly known as Élisabeth Sonrel, first trained with her father, an amateur artist in Tours, before moving to Paris in 1891 and studying at the Académie Julian, one of the few private art schools open to women (who were excluded from the state-sponsored École des Beaux-Arts until 1897).
