Istres Contencin studied sculpture at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence before pursuing drawing and painting in Paris, where he studied under Gérome and other leading Academic painters at the École des Beaux-Arts. Around 1880, he moved to Brittany to teach painting at the college of fine arts in Rennes. This Breton portrait of a barmaid and patron exemplifies the kinds of genre subjects he favored.
