Marguerite Bellanger was an actress who became mistress to the Emperor Napoleon III. She served as the subject for several of Carrier's fantasy busts, including for the sculptor's Four Seasons. Compare with the Buste de fantasie, Marguerite Bellanger, in the musée national du palais de Compiègne, which was featured on the cover of the catalogue for the major Carrier-Belleuse retrospective held at Compiègne in 2017, Carrier-Belleuse Le maître de Rodin.
