Bust of the Samaritan Woman
the headdress inscribed: SAMARITANA
white marble, on a white marble socle, inlaid with glass pastes
60.5cm., 24in.
This beautifully carved bust showcases the skill of Pietro Bazzanti, who was a central figure in the production of Florentine sculpture at the end of he 19th century. His studio provided a platform for other important sculptors, some of whose works are inscribed Galleria Bazzanti.
Bazzanti specialised in allegorical and genre subjects. He also had an interest in orientalist subjects, as exemplified by the present bust. The bust is distinguished not only by its astonishingly sensitive carving but also the rare integration of luminous green stones in the headdress. This feature, which appears to be unique in Bazzanti's oeuvre, indicates that the marble was created as a special commission.
