Description
Cangiullo, Francesco
I 4 Carabinieri.
1914.
A paroliberist composition.
Original ink sketch on grid paper. Signed and dated on the right “F. Cangiullo 1914”. 19 x 20 cm.
The composition is based on the painting I 4 Carabinieri (The 4 constables) that he painted in October 1913, with the “5 hunchbacks” (“gobbi”). Cangiullo made the following comment about this piece: “This is the very first idea of ‘humanised letters’, which came to me one afternoon in the cabinet making factory of my father - a wood carver. In Naples, October 1913”. (reproduced in L. Caruso and St. M. Martini, Tavole Parolibere Futuriste (1912-1944), II, 1977, p. 85 or Francesco Cangiullo, Futurista dissidente, edited by V. Carpita, Livorno, Biblioteca Labronica FD Guerrazzi, Villa Fabbricotti, 2019, cat. No 16, fig. 17 repr. p. 19; this painting appeared at the Prima Esposizione dell'Alfabeto a Sorpresa. Creazione dei Futuristi Cangiullo e Pasqualino, Roma, Casa d'Arte Bragaglia, November 1918, listed p. [11].)
This composition heralds the invention of humanised letters, and the future compositions of the 1918 “surprise alphabets” and his 1919 Caffeconcerto.
A certificate issued by Luce Balla will be presented to the buyer.

Cangiullo, Francesco
I 4 Carabinieri.
1914.
Une composition motlibriste.
Dessin original à l’encre sur papier quadrillé. Signé et daté à droite "F. Cangiullo 1914". 19 x 20 cm.
