Description

Sylvia Plath

Autograph letter signed, to Edith and William Hughes ("Dear Ted's mother & dad!"),

writing on board ship, about to sail for America ("...we set sail in an hour or two - Customs let us go by without even taking a look at our smuggled drugs & diamonds..."), 1 page, 8vo (175 x 132mm), headed stationery of RMS Queen Elizabeth, [20 June 1957]

PLATH PREPARES TO RETURN HOME. It was an exciting moment: she had a second degree, a poet husband, and her literary ambitions seemed to be coming within reach. She also had two months in her beloved Cape Cod to look forward to before she would start her new job teaching at Smith College, her alma mater. She was to remain in the USA with Hughes for the next two and a half years.
