According to Betsy James Wyeth, the present work depicts the granary located on the artist's property in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Purchased by Andrew and Betsy James Wyeth in 1961, the gristmill became the subject of the artist's acclaimed tempera, The Mill, located in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The present work is a study for this important painting and the bucket depicted hanging against the stone wall can also be seen in the distance of the final composition.
