According to Dr. Henry Adams, the present work "fits well with Benton's portrait studies of about 1928 . . . the painting is based on a series of sketches of African-American cotton pickers that Benton made in Georgia, probably during his cross-country sketching tour of 1928." He continues, "the brushwork of the painting has a somewhat rough but highly intelligent and purposeful character . . . It has the sweeping quality of rhythmically related forms that are characteristic of Benton's style."
