Bequest to the present owner from the above, 1915
Eliot Clark, Sixty Paintings by Alexander H. Wyant, New York, 1920, no. 40, n.p., illustrated

The present work was originally owned by Charles A. Schieren (1842-1915), an established politician and banker in New York. Schieren immigrated from Germany in 1856 at the age of fourteen. He settled in Brooklyn and began working for his father’s cigar manufacturing business. Schieren became a prominent figure of the New York Republican Party, which culminated in his election as Mayor of Brooklyn in 1893. The present work was bequeathed to the Brooklyn Museum of Art upon Schieren’s death in 1915 after suffering from pneumonia.
