Description

Antonio Zatta

Atlante novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni, e scoperte fatte dai più celebri e più recenti geografi, che ora per la prima volta si produce. Venice: Antonio Zatta, 1775 (1779)-1785

4 volumes, folio (378 x 253mm.), engraved title-page, double-page engraved frontispiece, engraved headpieces and initials, 46+52+54+62 (of 63) double-page engraved plates and maps with hand-colouring, volume 1 with a manuscript index loosely inserted (somewhat frayed), early nineteenth-century calf-backed marbled boards, lacking one plate in vol.4 (Il Paese de' Selvaggi Outauacesi), occasional light staining, a few small wormholes, extremities slightly rubbed

A comprehensive world atlas, with three volumes covering Europe (including Russia) and the fourth volume the rest of the world. It was designed to accompany Büsching's geographical treatise Erdbeschreibung in Italian translation (published by Zatta in 1773-1782 in 34 volumes), hence the appearance of Büsching's name on the spines of this copy.
