The attribution of these paintings to Hubert Robert is endorsed by Joseph Baillio in the 2003 Sotheby's sale catalogue, following first-hand inspection. He dates the pair to circa 1755–56, executed during Robert's early years in Rome when the artist was still very much influenced by the work of Giovanni Paolo Panini and yet to establish his definitive style.
