The Barberini Faun

bronze, on a mottled yellow marble base

bronze: 29 cm., 11½ in.

base: 4.3 cm., 1¾ in.

The Barberini Faun is one of the most celebrated sculptures to survive from antiquity. It is believed to be possibly the work of a Hellenistic sculptor of the Pergamene school or a later Roman copy. Discovered in the 1628 in a moat surrounding Castel Sant-Angelo in Rome, the work was immediately acquired by Cardinal Francesco Barberini and subsequently sold to Ludwig, Crown Prince of Bavaria. The Barberini Faun is today housed in the Glyptothek, Munich (inv. no. 218).
