This evocative head of the classical god of war appears to be adapted from the Borghese Ares, a monumental Roman marble statue after a presumed Greek bronze original from the 5th century BC, which is now housed in the Musée du Louvre. Several ancient marble heads of the Borghese Ares type have survived, including one now in the Hermitage Museum, which was discovered and restored in Rome in the late 18th century.
