Description

Probably German, 17th century

Relief with the Pietà

alabaster, in an ebonised wood frame

inscribed: 1552 (?)

relief: 37.5 by 31 cm., 14½by 12¼in.

frame: 52 by 46 cm., 20½by 18 in.

The present image of the Pietà, which was frequently adapted in European Renaissance and Baroque sculpture - from metal plaquettes to polychromed wood reliefs - has most recently been attributed to Guglielmo della Porta (circa 1515-1577). The model was popular in Germany, as is evidenced by a stone relief with the motif signed by the Thuringian sculptor Israel von der Milla, dated 1589 (Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig).
