His sale, New York, Stair Galleries, 16-17 September 2020, lot 178 (as part of a pair);

Where acquired by the present owner.

This lot and the following one belonged to Sir John Richardson, art historian and author of the magisterial biography of Pablo Picasso, the first volume of which was published in 1991 and which won the Whitbread book of the year award.


The canvas is based on a marble relief in the Capitoline Museum, Rome.1
