Hunter went to life classes at Glasgow Art Club during two periods of his career circa 1923-4 and in 1930. The present work dates from this later period. His friend and biographer T.J. Honeyman commented that: 'Hunter was very keen about it and did scores of drawings of the nude. Some he coloured with cheap crayon, adding an imaginative landscape setting. Others he left as he had first sketched them, in a hard heavy outline….but the kind of thing one feels impelled to look at again and again.' (T.J. Honeyman, Introducing Leslie Hunter, London, 1937, pp.157-158)
