Armour from an Important Private European Collection

A nimai-do gusoku [armour] 

Edo period, 17th - 18th century


the fine one hundred and twenty plate Unkai school iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a five-stage tehen kanamono of chrysanthemum form, black leather mabisashi [peak], the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with applied shakudo ishi-guruma mon [stone wheel crests], the five-tier shikoro [neck guard] of black lacquer and in kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in blue braid, stylised dear antler maedate [forecrest] and kuwagata, the russet iron mempo with detachable nose plate and broad yak bristle moustache, three-tier yodaregake [throat protector], the leather do [cuirass] hinged in two pieces, with further ishi-gurama mon on black leather, the lower part of the do with stenciled leather bands decorated with ferns in European manner, six-tier sode [shoulder guards], seven tassets of five-tier kusazuri [skirt], the underskirt with lacquered plates, with an armour storage box
