Jan Looten began his career in Amsterdam but he was much influenced by the earthy compositions of the Haarlem landscape painter, Jacob van Ruisdael. By around 1662, Looten was in England, where he worked in London and later, in York. A pair of landscapes attributed to Jan Looten, which date to c. 1675, were recorded at Windsor during the reign of King James II and remain in the Royal Collection.1
