Probably William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748–1811), Chatsworth;
Thence by descent;
Chatsworth: The Attic Sale, Sotheby's, 5–7 October 2010, lot 598 (as follower of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, R.A.).
Bolton Abbey Inventory, 1892, p. 109, no. 26 ('Stags head with shadow' as hanging in the Dining Room);
Francis Thompson, Catalogue of the Paintings in the Collection of the Dukes of Devonshire, 1933, no. 974.
In the nineteenth century, this distinctive painting hung in the Dining Room at Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire, in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire. The illusion of the stone wall, the dripping blood from the stag's neck, and the dramatic light and shadow, all add to the intensity of the painting.
