Strickland Lowry

Strickland Lowry was a portrait and landscape painter who worked in England, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Two similar trompe l'œil paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin,¹ and another in the Hunt Museum, Limerick.² The sitter here, dressed in an embroidered silk waistcoat and a fine blue jacket, is a member of the Anglo-Irish Stacpoole family. Lowry deliberately lights the sitter and the trompe l'œil frame from the same direction (upper left), adding a further dimension to the illusion.
